The sturgeon spawning season is starting according to the Wisconsin DNR!! This year high water may impact how close you can get to the river and the water’s visibility is also a factor.
It occurs over a 7-10 day period, so it comes and goes quickly. The chance to see these massive, historic fish up close and personal is something you can’t see anywhere else in the nation!
While it is impossible to predict the exact dates of the Sturgeon Spawning, keep in mind that the water temperature usually needs to be between 50-60 degrees, so keep an eye on the forecast. These fish are protected during this time by volunteers of the Sturgeon Patrol Guard, who are routinely scheduled from April 15th through May 5th at each location.
The most popular places to view the action are:
1.) Bamboo Bend in Shiocton (on Cty Hwy 54)
2.) Shawano Dam in Shawano
3.) Wolf River Sturgeon Trail in New London (about 2 miles west of New London on Cty Hwy X).
We got to see this Awesome sight last year and my advice for the first timers would be to make sure you have your camera and just be patient!
