The spawning season is starting late this year.  The DNR is hoping to see signs of the sturgeon beginning later this week with the warmer weather.  Stay tuned and I will update when I know more!

It occurs over a 7-10 day period, so it comes and goes quickly.  The chance to see these massive, historic fish up close and personal is something you can’t see anywhere else in the nation!

sturgeon1

While it is impossible to predict the exact dates of the Sturgeon Spawning, keep in mind that the water temperature usually needs to be between 50-60 degrees, so keep an eye on the forecast.  These fish are protected during this time by volunteers of the Sturgeon Patrol Guard, who are routinely scheduled from April 15th through May 5th at each location. (later this year)

The most popular places to view the action are:

1.)  Bamboo Bend in Shiocton  (on Cty Hwy 54)

2.)  Shawano Dam in Shawano

3.)  Wolf River Sturgeon Trail in New London  (about 2 miles west of New London on Cty Hwy X).

We got to see this Awesome sight last year and my advice for the first timers would be to make sure you have your camera and just be patient!

Shawano Ski Sharks!

Shawano Ski Sharks!

After watching my first Shawano Ski Shark show this past weekend (say that 3 times fast) ?  I realized that this Water Ski team has a lot to offer!
Here are the things I learned from seeing the Shawano Water Ski Show.

1.) There are bleachers to sit on but feel free to bring your own chairs or blankets, there is a lot of room to spread out! You will have a great view of the show, no matter where you are sitting!
ssscrowd

2.) There is a beach and the kids can go in the water, so put the kids in swimsuits because my kids were soaked through in their regular clothes! They didn’t care, they loved it!

3.) They have an awesome concession! Go hungry, get some food and relax while you watch the show.

4.) If you have a boat or pontoon, you can watch the show from the water, I’m guessing it’s a great view! (You see the multiple boats/pontoons)

5.) Be prepared to walk a little, parking can be a couple blocks away but so worth it!

6.) This team is talented! You will see stunts, barefoot skiing, ballet, pyramiads  and so much more.  It is highly entertaining and the announcers do a great job of getting the crowd going! You won’t be bored!
sssactsssact1

7.) Stay a bit after the show and see their boat go straight up in the water, my boys thought it was so cool and talked about it all night!

8.) They are breaking world records.  They just did a 30 man pull of barefooters just last month to break the existing world record.  How awesome is that?

After all that head to Smalley Park in Shawano and watch this great team put on a FREE show for you and your family, Wednesdays at 6pm.  Check out their website for all the show dates and times at www.shawanoskisharks.org
Besides the music is awesome, you will LOVE it, at least I did!
